The UN speaks out on Kenya’s upcoming GENERAL ELECTIONS due next MONDAY

The United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon has become the latest world figure to call for Kenyans to have peaceful and fair elections in March 4th.

The UN Sec-Gen conveyed his message of peace to President Mwai Kibaki on Wednesday through a telephone call.

Following the lead of other world leaders like US President Barrack Obama and his predecessor at the UN Koffi Annan, Ban also expressed “his sincere hope and belief that Kenyans working together and putting the collective interest of their country above any other consideration can ensure that the upcoming elections will be peaceful and credible".

These are the first elections since the disputed polls in 2007 and Ban recognized that the there have been success constitutional changes to “Kenya’s democracy and its electoral system since the last general election".

“He (Mr Ban) trusts that efforts made at many levels to prevent a repeat of past violence will be redoubled during the remainder of the campaign” he added.

The UN Sec-Gen also urged Kenyans to respect the autonomy of the Judiciary and that of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) which are the two bodies that are the heart of ensuring that next week elections are free and fair.

Ban also poured praise on the eight candidates currently in the Presidential race "for reaffirming their commitment to a peaceful and tolerant campaign and also for appealing to their supporters to do the same including rejecting inflammatory and fraudulent actions.”
